Japanese Natural Toishi Whetstone - Aiiwatani Akapin Extra Large San

This Japanese whetstone was cut by us from raw stone purchased by us directly from Japan, then thoroughly tested and coated with cashew lacquer on sides and back to protect the stone for long term use. It measures 285 mm (11.22 in) long × 60 mm (2.36 in) wide × 30 mm (1.18 in) thick, and weighs 1135g (40.04 oz / 2.50 lbs).

This giant San sized Akapin stone from the Aiiwatani is spectacular to hone razors/Kamisori with. While softer, it finishes quite fine and bright for it's softer nature. Covered in Red Nashiji (pear skin) patterns, it self slurries easily with reddish/pink mud. This slurry is quite grit rich and removing medium grit scratches is rather quick and easy. When honing razors, care must be taken to manage the slurry viscosity. slurry must be kept thin and hydrated throughout the process to yield the finest edge possible.
