This Japanese whetstone was cut by us from raw stone purchased by us directly from Japan, then thoroughly tested and coated with cashew lacquer on sides and back to protect the stone for long term use. It measures 145 mm (5.71 in) long × 90 mm (3.54 in) wide × 32 mm (1.26 in) thick, and weighs 890g (31.39 oz / 1.96 lbs).
Stone Testing Details:
Hardness: LV 3.7
A larger koppa of Aiiwatani Akapin. The stones surface is free and clear of any toxic lines or inclusions. This stone is a bit harder than most Akapin but still displays the same character traits as most. With beautiful red Nashiji like patterns on the surface, this stone will self slurry easily with beautiful pink mud. The stone is quite grit rich and effectively removes medium grit scratches with ease. The stone is almost fine enough to finish but struggles in that it it's so soft that it continuously releases fresh grit particles into the slurry making slurry breakdown nearly impossible. Still great for removing scratches and moving on to a final finisher afterward.
A photo of the stone's polishing ability on a high quality Japanese kitchen knife is shown.
