Stone Testing Details:
Hardness: LV 3
This hand held koppa is a soft piece of Aiiwatani Akapin (layer/strata). known for producing softer, muddier and less fine stones overall. This layer is located above Tomae strata and sometimes Akapin layer stones resemble Tomae and/or are a combination of both. Many Akapin stones are characterized by red coloration. This particular example is clean and free of any toxic lines/inclusions. Beautiful red Nashiji (pear skin) patterns cover the surface and create a rich, reddish/pink slurry. Perfect for pre finishing of razors and finishing kitchen knives. Although quite soft and absorbent, this stone is still quite grit rich and removes medium grit scratches in little time. While too soft for Mikawa Nagura Progressions, it works best with water only or light slurry with attention to detail in keeping the slurry hydrated. The resulting edges are sharp but a bit toothy to finish a razor. for knives, a beautiful, rich hazy Kasumi finish with dark Jigane and hazy core.
A photo of the stone's polishing ability on a high quality Japanese kitchen knife is shown.
